about

Adriana Smith is an artist who works within the digital mediums of video, animation, and video games. Through a fascination with horror cinema, Smith’s work juxtaposes bright and colourful imagery with dark undertones in order to present innervations of the uncanny that suggest feelings of fear and unease. Like a waking nightmare, her work situates a sinister subconscious hidden beneath a facade of normality that is inhabited by characters and objects trapped within a detached otherworldliness. Born in Ontario while currently living in Montréal, Adriana is studying towards completing her BFA in Intermedia/Cyberarts at Concordia University.

Red and Yellow Moon are complementary and exploratory digital art games that situate the player within a maze-like other world consisting of loops, exit less rooms, secret pathways and portals. Inspired by the mise-en-scène of such horror directors as Argento, Lynch, and Bava, the intensity of the colour red when contrasted with the darkness of in-game environments is utilized to illuminate the many paths that the player can navigate through as they are faced with fears of the unknown. Situated within a dark and red lit room, the two works are to be experienced within an atmospheric and physical extension of the in-game space.
