about

Founded in 2014, Ok Cool is a zine publisher and distro based in Montréal, Canada. Believing in DIY ethics, their goal is to showcase talented independent photographers and artists through zines. Ok Cool produces high quality zines because they believe photos are meant to exist physically ; its inherently simple structure makes it the ideal support to promote widely quality imagery.
-
As photographers themselves, they thrive on bringing more attention to the works of our peers by also getting involved in events (exhibits, art fairs, etc) and collaborating with other art organizations.

"Recap" exhibition
Throughout four years of activity, they’ve worked with so many talented photographers. For various reasons they felt it was time to close the loop. So they’re presenting a collective exhibit with some of the photographers they enjoyed working with. The exhibit is of eclectic size just as the venue hosting it.

Curators
Jean-Thomas Bouchard
Jean-Thomas’ first encounter with photography was when his friends in art school had to take mandatory photo classes, he instantly grew interest in it. Studying guitar making, social studies and anthropology, it’s only when he started studying graphic design and print that he felt he landed in the right field. Combining his passion for photography, graphic design and DIY spirit and ethics, which he acquired while growing up in hardcore punk and playing in bands, making zines was like putting two and two together. Feeling he was being a part of a unique community of like-minded makers, publishing other people’s work was simply the next logical thing he wanted to do.

Josni Bélanger
Josni Bélanger completed in 2014 the photography program at Cégep du Vieux-Montréal, the same year he released his first book Josni B. After a residency in France at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure de Photographie  in 2016, he comes back to Montréal and releases the zine Ad Rem published by Matters (Stolen Ground), collective that he joins later that year. He’s currently completing a bachelor in Photography at the Concordia University  where he’s diversifying his practices to create an eclectic portfolio.

Jonathan McNeil
In 2013, Jonathan McNeil completes a bachelor in Visual Arts and Media at UQAM. Specialized in analog photography and digital as well as a wild array of printed arts, he particularly likes setting up visual projects, his own as well as those of others. He developed a sharp eye for snapping moments and then arranging them seamlessly. It’s a practice that he’s been pushing further since joining Ok Cool in 2014.
