The concept

What is the Home Movie Factory?

about

After Tokyo, Paris, Sao Paulo, New York, Moscow, Cannes and Casablanca…, Chromatic presents, for the first time in Canada, Michel Gondry’s Home Movie Factory. The famous French director wishes to allow as many people as possible to experience the creative process behind directing a movie.
-
Like Jack Black and Mos Def in Gondry’s film Be Kind, Rewind, participants will create a movie from scratch in just three hours. Each group begins by writing a scenario with an intrigue, a genre, characters and a setting chosen among the 15 different decors offered by the Factory. Next comes the shoot, using in-camera editing: a single take per sequence. Three hours later, each group watches its movie in the screening room. As a souvenir, everyone leaves with a DVD and their creative spirits awoken.
-
This experience, born in 2008 of Michel Gondry’s creative mind, is open to all: film enthusiasts, movie lovers, laymen, adults and kids, everyone can participate! The three hour adventure is intended to be a convivial moment to discover film and play with it. In the Factory, everything is prepared so participants will find what they need to create a movie in three hours: costumes, decors and props. All with the goal to free their imagination and creativity.

The Home Movie Factory’s values
-
“With this project, I wanted to allow everyone the chance to create their own entertainment instead of consuming it”; such is the inspiration behind the creation of Michel Gondry’s Home Movie Factory. Its mission is to offer first and foremost an interactive and free experience that demystifies filmmaking and makes it accessible.

The objectives
-
There are four objectives to the Home Movie Factory:

       1. To unleash creativity by setting a context where imagination can grow with the help of decors, accessories and screenwriting;
       2. To accompany groups in their process by giving them a framework and the tools to create a movie;
       3. To encourage participation among a group by giving members an active role in the project, by encouraging them to speak up and by rewarding collective decisions;
       4. To bring the project to fruition while never succumbing to perfectionism, spontaneity is at the heart of its process.
